Acetum Herbarum, Herbal Hair Tonic with Rosemary, Stinging Nettle & Sage - The Dark Island Soap Co
150ml Acetum Herbarum – Herbal Hair Tonic Rinse
Our Acetum Herbarum (Latin for Vinegar Herbal) is an effective antimicrobial hair tonic treatment that removes product build-up, balances scalp pH, and boosts shine by sealing the hair cuticle. It treats dandruff, reduces frizz, and promotes healthier hair growth by soothing itchy, oily scalps. Made by slow-infusing rosemary, stinging nettle, and sage for two months in apple cider vinegar (containing "The Mother") and scented with rosemary, cedarwood, and lemongrass pure essential oils.

Why Apple Cider Vinegar with The Mother
Apple cider vinegar containing "the mother" is a popular, natural scalp and hair treatment that balances pH, clarifies build-up, and reduces dandruff due to its antimicrobial properties. "The Mother" provides beneficial enzymes and bacteria that promote a healthier scalp microbiome, leaving hair smoother, shinier, and less prone to breakage. It restores the scalp's natural acidity (pH 4.5–5.5), which can be disrupted by harsh shampoos. ACV effectively removes product residue, oils, and hard water build-up, acting as a natural detoxifier while combating fungus and bacteria that cause dandruff and itching. By sealing the hair cuticle, it increases moisture retention and reduces split ends.
The Power of Rosemary
Rosemary oil enhances hair health by promoting growth, reducing hair loss, and treating scalp irritation, often comparable to minoxidil but with fewer side effects. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties improve scalp circulation, strengthening hair from root to tip. Studies suggest effectiveness similar to 5% minoxidil, preventing dandruff and reducing breakage while nourishing hair follicles.
Stinging Nettle for Hair Strength
Stinging nettle supports hair health by blocking DHT (a hormone linked to hair loss), strengthening follicles with silica and sulfur, and balancing scalp sebum. Rich in minerals, it helps build and maintain the structural integrity of the hair shaft, reducing breakage. Its antibacterial properties soothe itchy scalps, prevent dandruff, and reduce inflammation while improving circulation to deliver oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles.
Sage for Scalp Balance
Sage (Salvia officinalis) provides significant hair and scalp benefits, including reducing hair loss through improved circulation and strengthening strands with antioxidants. It treats dandruff by balancing scalp oils, acting as an astringent to regulate sebum production—ideal for greasy hair. Its anti-inflammatory properties reduce itching and redness, while it adds shine, reduces frizz, and may help darken premature grey hair over time.
Essential Oil Benefits
Rosemary essential oil stimulates scalp circulation, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach hair follicles. It acts as a natural DHT blocker, reducing the hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles, while reducing itching and inflammation associated with dandruff.
Cedarwood essential oil stimulates circulation to promote hair growth and reduce hair loss. It balances oil-producing glands to treat dandruff and dry scalp, with antifungal and antibacterial properties that soothe itchiness and irritation.
Lemongrass essential oil boosts scalp and hair health by reducing dandruff, controlling sebum, and stimulating growth through its antifungal, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It strengthens hair follicles, cleanses and sanitises the scalp, and adds shine while balancing pH.
